I’ve got a blues solo for you to learn, complete with an intro and a turnaround!. This should help you get an idea of what a blues riff should or can sound like. For this one, we’ll be playing in the Key of A, mainly working off of a minor pentatonic scale.
When you’re learning this riff, I’d recommend playing it as is before trying to add in any flourishes, inflections, or vibrato. Once you can play it straight the way through as a tempo you’re comfortable with (no stops!), then you start experimenting with different sounds and effects. In fact, you're encouraged to!
Speaking of tempo, full speed for this is 94 beats per minute, but you can start somewhere around 60 and work your way up from there.
Once you’re comfortable with all of the above, practice it with a jam buddy! One of you can play the solo while the other plays the 12-bar blues shuffle (coming to you later in the lesson). Then, switch! It’s not nice to hog the spotlight!

The blues shuffle riff is a popular sound and often used by guitar players like T-Bone Walker (Going to Chicago, T-bone Shuffle) and Stevie Ray Vaughan (Cold shot, Pride and joy, Travis walk). While blues rhythm guitar suffices with a standard 12 bar blues shuffle, a cool shuffle riff is often more fun to play and interesting listen to.
